SUMMARY:Viscoelastic Creep in Lumbar Tissues: Implications for Biomechanic
 al Modeling

 Iowa State University)\n\nThis study explored the impact of viscoelastic c
 reep in lumbar passive tissues on internal moment predictions from a lumba
 r biomechanical model. Sixteen participants performed slow, controlled tru
 nk flexion motion after two 30-minute exposure-recovery protocols conducte
 d on separate days, alternating between full trunk flexion and upright sta
 nding. Three models were employed: 1) only EMG-assisted model (Active), 2)
  EMG-assisted model with time-invariant passive tissue (No-Creep), and 3) 
 EMG-assisted model with time-variant passive tissue components (Creep). Th
 e mean absolute error (MAE) between the external moment and predicted inte
 rnal moment was assessed across model types and trunk flexion angles. Resu
 lts revealed that the MAE of the Creep model was significantly smaller tha
 n that of the No-Creep and Active models beyond the trunk flexion angle of
  flexion-relaxation of lumbar paraspinals. The further analysis showed tha
 t the Creep model prevented the overestimation of compression and shear fo
 rces on the L4/L5 disc at full flexion compared to the No-Creep model.\n\n
