SUMMARY:Understanding Explanation Content for Cognitive and Affective Trus
 t in Automated Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Qiaoning Zhang (Arizona State University) and X. Jessie Yang a
nd Lionel Robert (University of Michigan)\n\nTrust is essential for the ad
option and success of automated vehicles (AVs), yet many users remain skep
tical about transferring control to these technologies. To build trust, AV
s can provide explanations about their decisions, but what kind of explana
tions matter most? This research explores how different types of AV explan
ations, describing what the vehicle is doing, explaining why it is doing i
t, or combining both elements, influence user trust. Through an experiment
involving 121 U.S. drivers who viewed simulated driving scenarios, this s
tudy examined effects on cognitive trust (related to perceptions of reliab
ility and competence) and affective trust (related to emotional comfort).
Results indicate that providing explanations significantly improves cognit
ive trust compared to providing no explanations at all. More importantly,
explanations that include reasons for actions particularly enhance affecti
ve trust, helping users feel emotionally connected to AVs. This study high
lights the importance of transparent communication in AV design, showing t
hat effective explanations are crucial not only for fostering user underst
anding but also for developing lasting emotional connections. These insigh
ts can guide future AV designs that encourage broader public acceptance an
d trust in automated driving technologies.\n\nTrack: User Experience\n\nMi
