SUMMARY:Attitudes, Behaviors, and Physiological Effects of Stress Manageme
nt Training on Collegiate Air Traffic Control Students
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Dattel, Michael McCormick, Rajan Maroju, Mohammed Viqer
, Jae Beum Lee, Lilia Bowden, Chaitanya Racharla, Anna Golendukhina, Haroo
n Jamanzi, Dongguang Yu, and Hui Wang (Embry Riddle Aeronautical Universit
 y) and Jamie Barrett (Federal Aviation Administration)\n\nStress, especial
ly in the workplace, is external pressures that an individual feels are ch
allenging one’s actions and abilities to respond competently and effective
ly. Work stress often infiltrates personal life, impacting relationships a
nd well-being. Air traffic control (ATC) is one of the many safety-critica
l occupations that affect our daily lives. Teaching stress management trai
ning (SMT) to ATC personnel may be beneficial for optimal work performance
and personal health.\nA stress management training course was conducted w
ith 87 participants (randomly assigned to an experimental group and a cont
rol group) enrolled in air traffic management courses at an aeronautical u
niversity. The experimental group showed significant improvement during a
graded simulator performance assessment when compared to the control group
. Indications that the SMT training course was also beneficial for the par
ticipants' personal lives. It is recommended that further testing and impl
ementation be conducted with air traffic control trainees as well as veter
an controllers.\n\nTrack: Aerospace Systems, Student Forum\n\nSession Chai

andigarh, India) and Judi See (Sandia National Laboratories)\n\n
