 coming Lunar and Martian exploration extravehicular activity (EVA) will re
 quire crew to perform field geology to accomplish overarching mission scie
 nce goals. To support crew during science operations, technological work a
 ids are currently in the process of being developed. However, deploying no
 vel technologies inherently changes the characteristics of a work domain, 
 which may introduce undesired work demands on operators, leading to an inc
 reased risk of injury or compromised performance. In this study, terrestri
 al field geologists were interviewed to derive human-centered engineering 
 design requirements that help guide ongoing system development efforts in 
 order to mitigate the human spaceflight risks of (1) adverse mission outco
 mes due to Earth independent human-systems operations and (2) risk of inju
 ry and compromised performance during EVA operations. Engineering design r
 equirements were synthesized from geologist feedback on narrative-rich use
  cases. These cases presented different contextual scenarios of proposed t
 echnological work aids and function allocations between human and robotic 
 agents within the exploration EVA environment to elicit different decision
 -making influences. Engineering design requirements synthesized from this 
 study can be adopted by analogous systems to those presented in the use ca
 ses to improve future human health and performance during planetary scienc
