SUMMARY:Can Someone Prove Your Operator Won’t Get Distracted? A Gentle Int
roduction to Formal Methods in Human Factors
DESCRIPTION:Stephen B. Gilbert (Iowa State University); Parth Ganeriwala (
Florida Institute of Technology); James Lathrop, Amanda Newendorp, and Ste
phen J. Fieffer (Iowa State University); Peggy Wu (RTX); Isaac Amundson (C
ollins Aerospace); Candice Chambers (Florida Institute of Technology); Ada
m Kohl, Shayama Khan, and Mohammadamin Sanaei (Iowa State University); Jun
aid Babar (Collins Aerospace); Timothy Wang (RTX); David Musliner, Robert
 P. Goldman, and Jeremy Gottlieb (SIFT); Eliot Winer and Michael C. Dorneic
h (Iowa State University); and Siddhartha Bhattacharyya (Florida Institute
of Technology)\n\nThis paper adopts an analytical approach to aiding huma
n factors professionals in judging the feasibility of applying formal meth
ods for their HMSs to verify system performance and safety. To offer this
guidance, this paper considers existing applications of formal verificatio
n in cognitive architectures, user interface design, human reliability ana
lysis, and human-machine systems safety, highlighting how logical reasonin
g and mathematical proofs can be applied to model human behavior within co
nstrained environments. This paper’s outcome offers human factors practiti
oners practical guidance in considering the trade-offs associated with for
 malizing human behavior.\n\n
