SUMMARY:User-Centered Mobile Health Design for Diabetes Self-Management in
  Underserved Populations
DESCRIPTION:Jesus Horacio Carillo Leal (Texas A&M University); Samuel Bone
 t (University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez); and Farzan Sasangohar (Texas A&
 M University, Houston Methodist Hospital)\n\nUser-centered design (UCD) or
  user experience design (UXD) methods have gained recent popularity for th
 e design of mobile health (mHealth) interventions. However, there is a gap
  in applying these methods for diabetes self-management. This study aims t
 o document the UCD process for a self-management mobile application for pa
 tients with diabetes in underserved communities. A UCD mixed-methods appro
 ach, including interviews with patients and providers, a review of literat
 ure, and a technology landscape analysis, was used to define the app's fun
 ctional information requirements that informed the design process. Usabili
 ty studies were used with the app developers, intended users, and a group 
 of nurse educators and dieticians to test and improve the design. An mHeal
 th app was developed with health-tracking features for stress, blood sugar
 , food, exercise, medications, weight, and blood pressure. We tackled vari
 ous usability and user experience challenges, including addressing issues 
 like low health literacy by employing a combination of user interface desi
 gn principles, intuitive visualizations, and automated data input features
 . A user-centered design approach contributed to a better understanding of
  the intended users’ needs, limitations, and expectations, facilitating th
 e design of a comprehensive mobile app for patients with diabetes in under
 served communities.\n\n
