SUMMARY:Driving with Empathy: Workshop Report on AI-driven In-vehicle Empa
thic Agent Design for Automated Vehicles
DESCRIPTION:Mungyeong Choe and Jiayuan Dong (Virginia Polytechnic Institut
e and State University); Esther Bosch (German Aerospace Center); Ignacio A
lvarez (Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt); Michael Oehl (German Aerospace
Center); Christophe Jallais (University Gustave Eiffel); Areen Alsaid (Uni
versity of Michigan, Dearborn); and Myounghoon Jeon (Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University)\n\nThe rapid development of automated vehi
cles offers promising avenues to enhance user experience and safety by int
egrating empathic in-vehicle interfaces. The report from the workshop [Hid
den for review] series, held during the [Hidden for review], investigates
the potential of employing generative artificial intelligence (AI) to deve
lop these empathic interfaces. Our workshop emphasized the importance of e
motion recognition and regulation for passengers in driving contexts and t
he role of future in-vehicle empathic interfaces. Through collaborative de
sign sessions, participants developed personalized in-vehicle agents to ad
dress drivers' emotional states to improve safety and enjoyment. We explor
ed insights by investigating the potential and possibilities of using gene
rative AI in the design process. This report discusses the significance of
empathic displays in facilitating the adoption of automated vehicles and
explores the potential and limitations of using generative AI in the desig
 n phases.\n\n
