  use of call-in weather briefings during preflight planning and the increa
 sed reliance on weather self-briefing, it is imperative to assess GA pilot
 s’ capabilities to perform effective weather self-briefing.  When performi
 ng preflight planning for weather, pilots examine weather products and con
 sider the weather conditions surrounding their flight path.  This study pe
 rformed a detailed inspection of the behavior processes GA pilots used as 
 they performed preflight planning for weather for a simulated flight and c
 ompared how their processes compared to those of the experts. Overall, the
  results indicated that pilots either lacked knowledge of which products c
 ontained information necessary to make an informed judgment on the weather
  conditions for the scenario or were unable to locate the correct products
  amongst the large number of products available or perhaps pilots lacked k
 nowledge and were also somewhat thwarted by the interface.  One limitation
  of the behavioral approach is that why the GA pilots are performing as th
 ey did remains unclear. Future research is needed to uncover the underlyin
 g reasons.  Additional work is needed to ensure that flight planning apps 
 help rather than hinder pilots during weather planning.\n\n
