SUMMARY:Beyond Media Literacy: Human Factors-Informed Education to Develop
  Cognitive Security
DESCRIPTION:Melissa McLain (University of Colorado Boulder, U.S. Air Force
 ) and James Crum (University of Colorado Boulder)\n\nThe Wellness and Inde
 pendence in the Social Media Era (WISE) education program equips students 
 with Cognitive Security skills, providing frameworks and toolkits for how 
 to deliberately think through controversial topics commonly steeped in dis
 - and misinformation (Herzog & Hertwig, 2025; Murrock, et al, 2018). The ‘
 attention economy’ we live in today profits from the time users spend on a
  given social media application, therefore motivating the designers to lev
 erage human factors principles for bad purposes, namely addictive design f
 eatures referred to as ‘dark patterns’ (Mildner, et al, 2021; Ruiz, et al,
  2024). By recognizing how ‘dark patterns’ use HF-principles and the assoc
 iated cognitive consequences (Lawrence, 2023), the WISE program developers
  created a holistic approach beyond media literacy skills to include metac
 ognition, emotional intelligence, civil discourse, and storytelling.\n\nTr
