SUMMARY:The Impact of Thrill on Situation Awareness in a Theme Park
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Dattel (Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University)\n\nSituat
ion Awareness (SA) and Performance in Aviation is a graduate course offere
d by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the Daytona Beach, FL campus.
One of the required assignments for this course is to conduct a research
project that measures SA. Universal Studios Orlando offers a unique opport
unity to examine human factors principles through the lens of SA. As a dyn
amic and high-stimulus environment, the theme park provides an ideal setti
ng to analyze how individuals perceive, process, and respond to informatio
n after experiencing a thrill ride. The study was completed by 12 graduate
students enrolled in the SA class. There were 47 total park patrons recru
ited after exiting three different thrill rides. These park patrons were s
urveyed and asked the same 14 questions. One student would ask one questio
n at a time while another student recorded the response times. Students an
alyzed participants’ questions and found variations in estimation of how l
ong rides lasted and SA (e.g., closest park exit, how long till park close
d). Correlations were found between how thrilling patrons found rides and
some of the responses. However, the most important outcome was the opportu
nity for the 12 graduate students to experience collecting and analyzing S
 A data in a field study.\n\n
