SUMMARY:Impact of eHMI on Pedestrians at Uncontrolled Intersections: Level
 -5 Automated Driving System Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Viktoria Marcus and Griffin Pitts (University of Florida) and 
 Sanaz Motamedi (Pennsylvania State University)\n\nEach year, over half of 
 global traffic fatalities involve vulnerable road users (e.g. pedestrians)
  due to human error. Level-5 Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) could reduce
  driver errors that contribute to accidents involving pedestrians, though 
 this potential depends on how easy they are for other road users to intera
 ct with. External human-machine interfaces (eHMIs) have been proposed to f
 acilitate communication between pedestrians and level-5 ADSs, though there
  is no consensus on which eHMI features are the best. In an online survey,
  160 participants responded to road-crossing scenarios involving a level-5
  ADS, both with and without an eHMI designed around pedestrians' informati
 onal needs. With the eHMI equipped, pedestrians crossed earlier and more c
 onfidently than without the eHMI, and fewer avoided crossing altogether. P
 articipants also reported that the eHMI significantly increased perception
 s of safety, trust, and understanding when interacting with level-5 ADSs. 
 Visual eHMI features (including the text display and external speedometer)
  were ranked as more necessary than auditory ones, though auditory cues we
 re valued highly in open-ended feedback. This study found that eHMIs can s
 ignificantly improve pedestrians’ understanding of level-5 ADSs’ intent an
 d improve perceptions of safety and trust, allowing for more efficient int
 eractions between the pedestrians and level-5 ADSs.\n\n
