SUMMARY:Non-physical Risk Factors at the Workplace - Acknowledge Them Now
or Pay Later in Health and Productivity!
DESCRIPTION:Rammohan Maikala (National Safety Council)\n\nWork-related mus
culoskeletal disorder (MSD) prevention has traditionally focused on physic
al risk factors. However, a holistic approach that also addresses organiza
tional, psychosocial, and behavioral risks is essential for greater workpl
ace health and productivity.\n\nObjectives: This presentation highlights w
hy future MSD prevention efforts must integrate both physical and non-phys
ical risk factors. Limiting focus to physical hazards alone undermines the
effectiveness of risk reduction strategies.\n\nApproach: A structured lit
erature review categorized studies into organizational, psychosocial, and
behavioral domains. Although not a systematic review, this work offers pra
ctical insights to help practitioners recognize the broader set of risks i
nfluencing MSDs.\n\nFindings: Organizational factors—such as work schedule
s, staffing, job security, training, and decision-making latitude—directly
affect MSD risk and must be included in prevention efforts. Psychosocial
risks, including job stress and lack of support, also significantly contri
bute and should be managed alongside physical risks. Behavioral factors, w
hile individually driven, can be influenced through wellness initiatives t
hat promote healthier lifestyles.\n\nTakeaways: Ergonomics and safety prof
essionals must lead efforts to assess and mitigate non-physical risks. By
addressing all contributing factors, organizations can foster healthier, m
ore resilient workplaces, ultimately reducing the burden of MSDs.\n\n
