SUMMARY:Defining User Roles and Interface Designs to Enhance Usability Com
petencies for Healthcare Professionals at the VHA Through a Centralized Kn
 owledge Platform
DESCRIPTION:Arindam Gupta, Jesse Flint, D'An Knowles Ball, Ashley Ercolino
, Nicole Dorey, Logan Gisick, Claire Hughes, William Rivera, and Kay Stann
ey (Design Interactive) and Ross Speir (U.S. Department of Veterans Affair
s)\n\nThe U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VHA) launched an initiative
to strengthen the usability competencies of informaticists—healthcare pro
fessionals managing health IT systems—after identifying critical usability
failures during electronic health record (EHR) rollouts. To address time
constraints and training gaps, a centralized, AI-powered knowledge platfor
m was developed. Using extensive front-end analysis methods, the team defi
ned four key user roles—Viewer, Creator, Reviewer, and Supervisor—and desi
gned the system to prioritize practical, just-in-time human factors compet
ency improvement materials. The platform features AI-driven search, modula
r design, real-world case studies, and personalized learning paths, all wh
ile maintaining accessibility standards. By embedding usability practices
into daily workflows, the initiative aims to enhance patient safety, opera
tional efficiency, and decision-making across the VHA. Future efforts will
focus on evaluating long-term impacts, promoting sustained usability prac
tices, and addressing barriers to adoption.\n\n
