SUMMARY:Getting Under Your Skin (and into your Brain): Reviewing and Synth
 esizing the Problematic Effects of Galactic Cosmic Radiation on Cognition 
 in Long Distance Space Missions
DESCRIPTION:Andrea C Silva and Stephen Fiore (University of Central Florid
 a)\n\nGalactic Cosmic Radiation (GCR) poses significant risks to astronaut
 s during long-duration space missions.  Although much progress is being ma
 de in other areas of science and engineering for the future of spaceflight
 , our understanding of the impact of GCR remains limited.  The potential f
 or negative consequences arise, not only with physical health, but also wi
 th behavioral and cognitive health.  In this presentation we briefly revie
 w the research linking radiation exposure to problems in cognition. From t
 his, we create a conceptual map illustrating the relationship between GCR 
 exposure and cognitive decay. We link these to individual (e.g., working m
 emory) and collaborative cognitive processes (e.g., team problem solving).
  This will be done through a review of the extant literature examining cog
 nitive effects of GCR and organization of key themes and essential concept
 s relating cognition and GCR. Our goal with this conceptual map is to high
 light potential gaps in existing research, help develop research questions
 , and guide future work for understanding the cognitive challenges posed b
 y GCR in long distance space missions.\n\n
