  critical factors influencing mobility and energy efficiency in aging popu
 lations, yet their interplay remains underexplored. This study investigate
 s the relationship between spatiotemporal gait features and metabolic cost
 s in older adults. Our findings reveal that increased gait variability, su
 ch step length and stride velocity, is significantly associated with highe
 r reserve metabolic cost, indicating that stability plays a key role in en
 ergy efficiency. Additionally, compensatory gait strategies, such as prolo
 nged double support phases, further contribute to elevated metabolic deman
 ds. These findings highlight the importance of targeting gait stability an
 d reducing variability to enhance energy efficiency and mobility in aging 
 populations, paving the way for future research and interventions designed
