SUMMARY:Ongoing Research Activities Supporting General Aviation Pilots and
  Weather Information Dynamics
DESCRIPTION:Ian Johnson (Federal Aviation Administration), Brandon Pitts (
 Purdue University), Michael Dorneich (Iowa State University), and Mary Joh
 nson and Barrett Caldwell (Purdue University)\n\nGeneral Aviation (GA) wea
 ther-related accidents continue to result in the highest number of fatalit
 ies each year. Most of these accidents can be attributed to incorrect situ
 ation assessment and decision-making. The FAA’s Weather Technology in the 
 Cockpit (WTIC) Program sponsors research to address these human factors ch
 allenges, which include introducing and evaluating new weather-related coc
 kpit displays, mobile technologies, and applications by industry. This res
 earch aids in developing, verifying, and validating Minimum Weather Servic
 e (MinWxSvc) recommendations for Parts 91,121,135, and new and emerging en
 trants. In this session, a moderated panel will discuss ongoing WTIC-spons
 ored research projects being performed at different universities, all aime
 d at understanding and addressing weather-related GA issues. The projects 
 relate to the 1) use of extended reality (XR) to enhance student pilot lea
 rning, 2) development of speech recognition technology to automate the pil
 ot report (PIREP) submission process, and 3) assessment of pilot sensemaki
 ng and weather information usage in low altitude operations. The results o
 f this collective work demonstrate ongoing and safety-focused research int
 ended to support GA pilots through multiple stages of their flying experie
 nce. The weather-related research emphases include improvements in pilot e
 ducation, information presentation, decision-making, and human-systems int
 egration aspects of human factors and systems engineering.\n\nTrack: Aeros
