SUMMARY:Open Verbal Communication with Real-Time Gaze Sharing Improves Tea

 Sara Riggs (University of Virginia)\n\nIn high-stakes environments like Un
 manned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operations, effective verbal team communicatio
 n is critical yet often hindered by environmental noise. This study explor
 es how verbal communication and real-time gaze sharing—visualizing a teamm
 ate’s gaze through fixation trails—affects team performance. Twenty-four t
 wo-person teams completed simulated UAV tasks under three conditions: no g
 aze sharing with communication, gaze sharing only, and both gaze sharing a
 nd communication. Results revealed that combining gaze sharing with commun
 ication significantly improved team performance and reduced mental workloa
 d. This combination also improved visual attention strategies, as evidence
 d by reduced saccadic activity and more stable fixations. Participants als
 o reported improved shared awareness and coordination. These findings unde
 rscore the complementary benefits of integrating verbal and non-verbal com
 munication tools. By highlighting the value of gaze sharing in complex tea
 m settings, this work informs the design of adaptive interfaces that suppo
 rt collaborative decision-making and shared awareness in operationally dem
