Biography
Dr. Benda is an Assistant Professor of Health Informatics in Columbia’s School of Nursing. She is cross trained in human factors engineering and health informatics. Dr. Benda’s program of research utilizes human-centered design methods to improve the quality, safety, and inclusivity of healthcare, with a special focus on developing health technologies and artificial intelligence (AI). She has become recognized in the field as an expert on human-centered AI, providing several national and international talks on the topic. Dr. Benda her colleagues have conducted multiple studies, funded by the National Institute on Mental Health, assessing patient perspectives on the use of AI for mental health applications that have been published in outlets such as the Journal of General Internal Medicine and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. The goal of their work is to advocate for a more patient-centered approach to the development and implementation of AI.
