Monica Jones, PhD, BCPE is an Associate Research Scientist in the Biosciences group at the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), an interdisciplinary research institute whose mission is to focus on multidisciplinary research to advance safe and equitable transportation and mobility. Motivated by eight years of practice as an industrial engineer in the automotive industry, her research at UMTRI focuses on human factors, engineering anthropometry, vehicle occupant protection, human modeling for vehicle design and other areas of ergonomics, including tools to facilitate the design of consumer products. Although her research addresses the population as a whole, she seeks to prioritize children of varying ages, occupants susceptible to motion sickness, obese occupants, and military personnel. Her research is supported by a diverse portfolio of industry and government funders, including Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the U.S. Army, Waymo, AISIN, Toyota Boshoku, Honda R&D, Ford Motor Company, Toyota, General Motors, and Apple. She has published over 100 technical publications, including 30 refereed journal articles. Monica earned her PhD in Industrial and Operations Engineering (with a specialization in Human Factors/Ergonomics) from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship at Canada Defence Research & Development Centre.
