Dr. Mouloua is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Applied/Experimental and Human Factors Psychology doctoral program (2008-2017) at the University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida. He received his PhD (1992) and M.A. (1986) degrees in Applied/Experimental Psychology from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. Before joining the faculty at UCF in 1994, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Cognitive Sciences Laboratory of the Catholic University of America from 1991 to1994 where he studied and researched several aspects of human-automation interaction topics sponsored by NASA, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR). Upon his arrival to UCF, he became a senior scientist at the Center for Applied Human Factors in Aviation (1994-1998), Assistant Professor of Psychology (1994-1999), Associate Professor of Psychology (1999-2005), and Full Professor of Psychology (2006 to Present). In addition, he served as Associate Director and Senior Scientist (1998-2001) and Director and Chief Scientist (2001-2013). He directed the Human Factors Research Program at the Center for Advanced Transportation Systems Simulation (CATSS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) from 1999 to 2001. He has over 29 years of experience in teaching, practicing, researching, and evaluating complex human-machine systems. His research interests include human performance evaluation, human-automation interaction, pilot-alerting system interaction, automation and workload, pilot training, and detection of automation failures. Additionally, he focuses on adaptive function allocation, human monitoring of systems, cognition, and performance of older pilots and drivers, as well as simulation technologies and training in transportation systems. Dr. Mouloua is the editor of several books including Human Factors in Simulation and Training (In Pres; October 2023) Volumes 1 and II , (CRC Press), Human Performance in Automated and Autonomous Systems: Current Theory and Methods (2020; CRC Press), and Human Performance in Automated and Autonomous Systems: Emerging Issues and Practical Perspectives (2020; CRC Press), Aging and Human Performance, Special Section of the Human Factors Journal (2005), Human Performance in Automated Systems: Current Research and Trends (1994, Erlbaum Press), Human-Automation Interaction: Research and Practice (1997, Erlbaum Press), Automation and Human Performance: Theory and Applications (1996, Erlbaum Press), Automation Technology and Human Performance: Current Research and Trends (1999, Erlbaum), Human Factors in Simulation and Training (2009, Taylor & Francis Group), Automation and human performance: Theory, research, and practice (2004, Volumes I & II; Lawrence Erlbaum Associates), and Proceedings of the 2nd ACM Symposium on Computer Human Interaction for Management of Information Technology (ACM, CHIMIT, 2008). Dr. Mouloua has over 185 publications and scientific reports published in journals such as Experimental Aging Research, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Perception and Psychophysics, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, International Journal of Aviation Psychology, Journal of Cognitive Engineering and Decision Making, Work: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment, and Rehabilitation, Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments, International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics, Ergonomics in Design, Gerontechnology, ACM Transactions, TRB Transportation Research Record, Ergonomics, Applied/Ergonomics, Transportation Research Part F: Psychology and Bahaviour, etc. In addition, he has also made over 300 presentations at various local, regional, national, and international meetings throughout his career. Dr. Mouloua was the recipient of the prestigious Jerome Ely (1997) and the Tidewater Awards (1999) from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. Dr. Mouloua has been a PI or Co-Pi on several funded grants including In-Vehicle Sensors to Detect Cognitive Change in Older Drivers (National Institute of Health/National Institute on Aging Sub-Award with FAU), Robot Compromise (US Air Force, Office of Scientific Research), Human Factors Study on the Use and Effectiveness of Innovative Safety Messages on Dynamic Message Signs (Florida Department of Transportation), Human Factors Study on the Use of Colors for Express Lane Delineators (Florida Department of Transportation); Stealth Optimized, Adaptive Assessments for Multi-usage UAS Operator Selection, (Adaptive Immersion Technologies/ONR, the development of UAV/UCAV Guidelines for DARPA, Drive ID: An Innovative Driver Safety System (US DOT), Aging and Driving: Effects of Workload and Neurocognitive Factors (FDOT), Covert Multi-sensory feedback for the Dismounted Soldier, Effects of Telematics on Driver Workload: A Protocol Development and Analysis (AAA), Automation and Human Performance: Current Research and Trends (NASA and ONR), etc. At UCF, Professor Mouloua received 6 prestigious Teaching and Research Awards and was inducted into the UCF College of Sciences Millionaire Club for procuring over $1 Million in research funds, was awarded a UCF “Twenty Years Service” award in 20014, was also awarded the UCF International Golden Key and Honorary member (2011), and his research was selected among top-30 best-published research articles in the last 50 year by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, Santa Monica, California in 2008). Furthermore, Dr. Mouloua also teaches various courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. As a result of his teaching efforts, Dr. Mouloua was awarded a distinguished visiting professorship as part of his UCF sabbatical leave at the University of Technology of Compiegne, Compiegne, France, in 2008. Dr. Mouloua is currently the Director of the Transportation Research Group (TRG) laboratories at UCF.
