Biography
Dr. Piyush Chanana is a researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, where he leads the National Centre for Assistive Health Technologies (NCAHT). He has been an integral part of the Assistech Lab at IIT Delhi since 2012, focusing on developing assistive solutions for individuals with visual impairments .
Dr. Chanana completed his PhD in Assistive Technologies from IIT Delhi. His work emphasizes user-centric design and community engagement, aiming to create affordable and effective assistive technologies. He has played a pivotal role in the development of the Smartcane, an electronic travel aid that has reached over 70,000 users in India and abroad .
He is also a co-founder of the Raised Lines Foundation, a social enterprise dedicated to producing tactile diagrams and educational materials for visually impaired students. This initiative has produced thousands of tactile books, enhancing access to education for many .
Before his tenure at IIT Delhi, Dr. Chanana served as an Assistant Professor at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Engineering in New Delhi, where he taught embedded systems and digital design for six years.
In recognition of his contributions, he received the Neilom Prize in 2019, awarded to the best outgoing student of IIT Delhi for work in assistive technology, and a national award for applied research benefiting persons with disabilities.
