Emily S. Patterson is a Professor in the College of Medicine, School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at The Ohio State University. She obtained her Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering at The Ohio State University in 1999. Her primary area of expertise is human factors engineering, which is a multidisciplinary approach to the design of automated decision support that aids human cognition in complex settings. She is a Fellow of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) and a member the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). Dr. Patterson has served as lead principal investigator on federally funded grants, including for AHRQ, the VA, the Air Force, the Navy, and the National Patient Safety Foundation. Dr. Patterson served as a scientific advisor on using human factors engineering to improve patient safety for The Joint Commission, the National Board of Medical Examiners, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, ECRI, and the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Patterson has given invited presentations to the Institute of Medicine and the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Patterson serves as Associate Editor in charge of the healthcare section for the Human Factors Journal and previously on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. Overall, Dr. Patterson has published 1 edited book and has an h-index of 47 on Google Scholar with over 9000 citations.
