Biography
Professor, Human Systems Engineering, Arizona State University
Dr. Nancy Cooke is a Professor of Human Systems Engineering at The Polytechnic School within Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. She also serves as Senior Scientific Advisor to ASU’s Global Security Initiative Center for Human, AI, and Robot Teaming and is affiliated with multiple interdisciplinary centers, including the Center for Cybersecurity and Trusted Foundations and the Center for Organization Research and Design. Dr. Cooke earned her Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology from New Mexico State University in 1987.

An expert in team cognition, human-autonomy teaming, and cognitive engineering, she has led major projects funded by DARPA, NASA, the Army Research Laboratory, and others. Her research applies to a range of domains including military systems, cybersecurity, healthcare, and emergency response. Dr. Cooke is a past president of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), past chair of the Board on Human Systems Integration at the National Academies, and recipient of the HFES Arnold M. Small Distinguished Service Award. Her work focuses on eliciting and evaluating individual and team cognition to improve system design and mission effectiveness in high-stakes environments.
