Claudia Mello-Thomas
Biography
Claudia Mello-Thoms is an Associate Professor in the Department of Radiology and in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa. She is the Director of Perceptual Research in the Department of Radiology. Her research focuses on understanding and modeling the visual search and decision-making processes of radiologists and pathologists as they read and diagnose medical images. She uses eye-position recording to capture visual search patterns, and then combines them with machine learning algorithms that aim to predict radiologists’ and radiology residents’ decisions as they read 2d mammograms and 3d digital breast tomosynthesis scans, looking for breast cancer. In addition, she evaluates the implementation of AI in the clinical practice of radiology, specifically in Breast Imaging and in Cardiothoracic Imaging. Her research is supported by the NIH, Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center and industry partners, such as Siemens Healthineers.
