Creating Safer Workplaces: The Role of Human and Organizational Factors in Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs)

DescriptionDespite significant advancements in workplace safety, industries such as mining, oil and gas, and construction continue to grapple with Serious Injuries and Fatalities (SIFs). The persistence of these issues highlights gaps in identifying and addressing human and organizational factors contributing to unsafe behaviors and hazardous conditions. This case study examines collaborative efforts with industry clients to implement human and organizational factors-driven solutions to reduce SIFs by drawing on recommendations for improving leadership practices, training programs, and team dynamics. Many previous approaches focus on technical factors and the implementation of critical controls (i.e., a control that the absence of would significantly increase risk of a hazard even in the presence of other controls) to manage safety behaviour and mitigate SIF-potentials (i.e., an event that could lead to a SIF) and SIF-actuals (i.e., an event when a SIF occurred). Despite the crucial contributions of this work, the rates of SIFs have not substantially changed. So, what are we missing? To extend our understanding of SIF safety, this work explores how individual- (e.g., emotions, work perceptions), team- (e.g., leadership, conflict) and organizational-level (e.g., psychological safety, safety culture) factors influence safety behaviours and ultimately contribute to improving SIF prevention.
