Trust versus Distrust in Automation: Further Evidence of Distinct Factors
DescriptionAutomation is increasingly integrated into work environments, yet operator reliance often depends on trust in automated systems. The present study examined the dimensionality of trust versus distrust in automation by comparing two different trust scales. The findings provide further evidence that trust and distrust are distinct constructs rather than opposite ends of a continuum. From a practical perspective, researchers should avoid collapsing trust and distrust items into a single score, as the distrust factor demonstrates discriminant validity, while trust shows partial convergent validity.
