Estimating the Cost of Unknown Musculoskeletal Disorder Risks for an Organization

DescriptionThe purpose of this proposed practical innovation presentation is to develop and demonstrate a simple model, using only publicly available data, that can estimate the cost of unknown MSD risk for jobs or tasks within an organization. The model only requires a few inputs - (a) number of employees; (b) incidence rates of total recordable cases, private industry; (c) percentage of recordable injuries associated with strains, strains, or tears (e.g., MSD); (d) average direct costs per sprain, strain, or tear - and nominal effort to generate a practical and plausible estimate. As a result, organizations can quickly calculate their risk profile and associated costs from a risk management perspective. Furthermore, these models can be easily adapted to include other possible factors that could contribute to estimating the cost of unknown MSD risks, such as: (a) average total (e.g., direct and indirect) costs per sprain, strain, or tear; (b) injury reporting compliance; (f) specific injury type costs (e.g., sprains, strains, hernia, carpal tunnel syndrome, low back pain, among others). As a result, organizations can quickly calculate their risk profile and associated costs from a risk management perspective.
