A Fatigue Risk Management System Dashboard for High-Risk Occupational Settings

DescriptionWorker fatigue is one of the crucial factors contributing to several accidents and injuries in the oil and gas sector. Oil and gas companies have utilized Safety Management Systems (SMS) and Fatigue Risk Management Systems (FRMS) to track fatigue and incidents; however, many systems do not provide enough information to support supervisory-level decisions, highlighting the need for SMS and FMRS dashboards based on user-centered design principles. A longitudinal study was conducted with 70 participants to determine incident and fatigue predictors, create the SMS and FRMS dashboard, and iterate the dashboard based on interviews with experts in the offshore setting. This led to a dashboard that provided main, crew, individual, and crew comparison interfaces, with each interface providing incidents, fatigue level, safety culture, and readiness features. Each interface provided graphical trends of the features across the year, month, and week, along with summaries of the metrics. An “Action Tab” was included in the fatigue section to provide various fatigue mitigation techniques to aid reduce fatigue-related incidents and promote worker well-being. This dashboard provides offshore settings with novel methods to assess worker fatigue and supervisory-level decision support to improve worker safety through incident tracking and actionable fatigue mitigation techniques.
