What Do We Call Ourselves?
DescriptionOur profession is suffering from an identity disturbance. We do not agree on what the profession should be called or on the boundaries of our expertise. What should we call ourselves? Human factors engineers? Ergonomists? Usability or User Experience Professionals? Even our professional societies have changed names and redefined themselves over time. While this confusion is real to us, think how confusing it is to people outside of our profession. We explore questions including:
● How has our profession progressed over time?
● How has our language to describe our work changed over time?
● How do we progress/adapt to change?
While others have told the history of our profession (Drury, 2008; Meister, 1999; Stuster, 2006), none have comprehensively addressed what we call ourselves and how we name professional societies that represent us.
We traced the history and tell the story of the terms used to describe and define our profession and the names we have chosen for our professional societies. We start with Hippocrates' initial concepts of user-centered design applied to surgical workstations and continue marking milestones along the way, up to the present.
