Collaborative SEIPS-based Process Mapping Method: Application to Emergency Department Discharge
DescriptionThe objective of this study is to describe a novel collaboration and SEIPS-based process modeling method, applied to the case of an older adult’s discharge from the emergency department (ED). Through seven patient-centered observations and seven ED clinician interviews, we iteratively developed nine versions of the ED discharge process map. This map visually represents the five work system elements of the SEIPS model and collaboration, including 14 discharge activities distributed throughout the ED discharge process, six collaborative interactions between patients and ED clinicians, patient work, and ED clinician work. Within these six collaborative activities, we identified two instances of learning, seven instances of coordinating, and six instances of communicating, represented by icons on the process map. By incorporating the patient perspective, often excluded from process maps that represent clinical work, we identified instances of collaboration and patient work during the ED discharge process that might otherwise have been overlooked. Furthermore, highlighting collaboration on the process map provides insights that may aid in designing interventions to improve the discharge process for older adults.
