Digital Health Coaching Interventions for Hypertension and Diabetes: A Scoping Review of Literature
SessionPoster Session 2
DescriptionPersonal health is fundamental to living a normal and fulfilling life. However, the prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension has been on the rise in recent years. Digital Health Coaching (DHC) has emerged as a promising method to combat the rapid growth of chronic conditions. However, despite the growing adoption of DHC, its effectiveness varies, and its potential for automated coaching and scalability of such intervention remains uncertain. A scoping literature review was conducted to analyze the current methods used to provide DHC to modify the behavior of individuals with diabetes and hypertension. The findings from our scoping literature review showed a promising impact of DHC on health, although such an impact depended heavily on the availability of healthcare professionals. Such dependence on a human coach may limit the scalability and accessibility of such interventions. There is a lack of automated digital coaching systems capable of improving clinical outcomes, as only 4% of the reviewed literature demonstrated such capability. Arguably, such technologies would benefit demographics that lack access to healthcare professionals. Future work is warranted to investigate and establish the requirements for automated digital coaching interventions.
