The Impact of Thrill on Situation Awareness in a Theme Park

DescriptionSituation Awareness (SA) and Performance in Aviation is a graduate course offered by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the Daytona Beach, FL campus. One of the required assignments for this course is to conduct a research project that measures SA. Universal Studios Orlando offers a unique opportunity to examine human factors principles through the lens of SA. As a dynamic and high-stimulus environment, the theme park provides an ideal setting to analyze how individuals perceive, process, and respond to information after experiencing a thrill ride. The study was completed by 12 graduate students enrolled in the SA class. There were 47 total park patrons recruited after exiting three different thrill rides. These park patrons were surveyed and asked the same 14 questions. One student would ask one question at a time while another student recorded the response times. Students analyzed participants’ questions and found variations in estimation of how long rides lasted and SA (e.g., closest park exit, how long till park closed). Correlations were found between how thrilling patrons found rides and some of the responses. However, the most important outcome was the opportunity for the 12 graduate students to experience collecting and analyzing SA data in a field study.
