Effects of Time Headway on Driving after Prolonged Automation Exposure: Evidence for Behavioral Adaptation
DescriptionWhen the control of a vehicle changes from manual to automated, a driver’s role changes from an active operator to a passive supervisor who monitors the automated vehicle (AV). This can result in adverse behavioral adaptation effects (BAEs). For example, prior studies showed that after being exposed to an AV that adopts an extremely small time headway for a prolonged duration, drivers may adopt a shorter time headway than what they would normally adopt after they take over manual control. However, the effect of an AV’s headway on BAEs has not been examined. The current study conducted two experiments to determine whether a) the effect of exposure duration (15, 25 minutes) on a driver’s headway post-automation depends on the AV’s headway during automation (0.3s, 0.6s), and b) a driver’s trust in the AV varies with the AV’s headway (0.3s, 0.6s, 1.5s). Results revealed that trust was positively correlated with AV headway. Furthermore, a significant number of drivers reduced their headways after regaining control of the vehicle, a result consistent with prior BAE research. Future research is needed to investigate how long drivers maintain their reduced headways after regaining control.
