Eye-Tracking Metrics and Visuospatial Task Complexity: A Comparative Analysis

DescriptionThis study examines the differences in eye-tracking metrics between a simple and complex visuospatial task. Visuospatial tasks, such as object recognition, navigation, and visual search, involve high-level cognitive functions and are essential in domains like healthcare and aviation. Visuospatial tasks involve varied eye behaviors such as rapid visual search, fixations, and pupil adjustments, depending on the task’s complexity, which are closely linked to underlying cognitive functions. Understanding how different eye-tracking metrics change during visuospatial tasks’ complexity provides valuable insights into measuring cognitive processes in task complexity. This study was conducted in a controlled laboratory setting with a cohort of 20 university students who built two Lego models - simple and complex. Eye-tracking metrics such as saccades, fixations, pupil diameter, fixation, saccade, and blink rate were collected while the participants built the two Lego models. The findings revealed that, relative to the complex task, the simple task elicited a significantly lower blink rate but larger pupil diameter and longer fixation durations, whereas blink duration did not differ between the two tasks. These findings suggest that eye-tracking metrics can capture visual behavioral differences related to task complexity and inform training designs in domains with embedded visuospatial tasks.
