Developing a Large Language Model-Driven mHealth System for Loneliness and Social Isolation and Comparing It to a Rule-Based-Approach System

DescriptionLoneliness and social isolation are pervasive public health challenges that demand innovative, scalable solutions. Mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a promising platform for addressing these issues; however, the potential benefits of integrating large language models (LLMs) compared to traditional rule-based systems have yet to be thoroughly evaluated. This study has two primary objectives: (1) to design and build two functionally aligned mHealth prototypes: a rule-based system and an LLM-driven system to reduce loneliness and social isolation, and (2) to evaluate these prototypes in terms of technical feasibility, personalization features, usability, acceptance, and development costs. The study explores key trade-offs and synergies between LLM-driven and rule-based systems, which will provide actionable insights for optimizing mHealth interventions targeting loneliness and social isolation. These outcomes will contribute to evidence-based frameworks and lay the groundwork for future longitudinal trials.
