In-Room Primary Care Time Study Using a Near Field Electromagnetic Ranging System

DescriptionThis project aims to enhance our understanding of patient care by utilizing innovative time study data analytics. It employs a Near-Field Electromagnetic Ranging (NFER) system, which has proven to be an effective real-time location system (RTLS) for use in complex indoor environments. The research team implemented this advanced nursing activity analysis system in the medical Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the University Hospital, part of the University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, Missouri. A key focus of the study is to thoroughly assess the accuracy of the location system by comparing its performance with manual observations of nursing activities in patient rooms. The NFER system effectively captured real-time location data of nursing activities, serving as an observational tool in the busy ICU environment. This data was then rigorously compared to findings from time-motion studies, allowing for a detailed examination of the system's accuracy. By illuminating these workflows, the system has great potential to enhance our understanding of the complexities involved in the nursing profession within the ICU setting.
