Evaluating the Impact of Personal Protective Equipment on Ladder Task Accuracy and Perceived Ergonomics
DescriptionThis study examines the relationship between personal protective equipment (PPE) use, measurement accuracy, and self-perceived task difficulty during ladder-based tasks. Twenty-four participants completed ladder ascent and measurement tasks under four PPE conditions involving gloves and sole grips. Measurement accuracy was assessed by comparing reported values against a predefined ground truth, while post-task surveys captured perceptions of confidence, risk, and difficulty. Results showed a strong correlation between self-perception and accuracy: higher confidence was associated with lower measurement errors, whereas higher perceived risk and difficulty corresponded with greater deviations. The mean absolute error was 0.121 cm, and the root mean square error was 0.248 cm. Bayesian models and correlation analyses showed how cognitive and physical factors affect precision. These findings suggest that PPE use influences both objective performance and subjective experience, highlighting the need to integrate perceptual factors into ergonomic assessments to enhance safety and training for ladder-related tasks.
