Telehealth Use Among Pregnant Women: A Statistical Analysis of the 2023 NHIS Data

DescriptionTelehealth has become an integral part of healthcare delivery, offering access to healthcare at a distance using digital technologies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telehealth was used in low-risk pregnancy care to enhance prenatal and postpartum care in rural areas, mainly where access to maternity care was limited. Yet, it is not clear if the use of telehealth has continued and for which populations of pregnant women. Therefore, this study used the 2023 National Health Interview Survey data to identify the factors associated with women, especially pregnant women, using telehealth services after the pandemic. We used a binary logistic regression model to determine which factors were associated with self-reported telehealth usage among women and pregnant women at the time of the survey. Our findings suggest that education level, familiarity with digital technology, mental health conditions, as well as financial status, are associated with the telehealth usage among women and pregnant women. For telehealth services to improve, it is critical to understand the population of users and their motivations for using the services. This study provides an examination of those who used telehealth, and future research should explore factors associated with telehealth usage among other clinical and demographic populations.
