Strategic Implementation of User Design Principles for Updating the Supplemental Data Service Provider-Consolidated Dashboard
DescriptionThe Supplemental Data Service Provider-Consolidated Dashboard (SDSP-CD) user interface was designed to streamline information for users who are planning routes and operations that involve a fleet of uncrewed aircraft systems (UASs). The user interface can be broken down into two main components: a compact dashboard at the top left of the interface and an interactive map. The compact dashboard presents information using rows for each UAS and columns for each hazard (hazards are assessed and evaluated by various back-end services). The services that are currently integrated in the SDSP-CD tool assess the following vehicle metrics, hazards, and risks along a user’s proposed flight path: (1) battery’s state of charge, (2) proximity to buildings and trees, (3) ground risk assessment of known population centers, (4) GPS connectivity strength, (5) radio frequency interference, and (6) availability of parking spots at vertiports and landing sites. These back-end services assess the routes uploaded by the user and provide information in the compact dashboard using a 3-tier color-code system with green (low risk), yellow (moderate risk), and red (high risk) alerts. Using established user interface design principles and the results from a prior SDSP-CD usability study, a new prototype interface was developed and tested.
