Human Factor in 3D Concrete Printing for Construction

Description3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) is transforming the construction industry by reducing reliance on manual labor and enhancing design flexibility. While the technology offers safety benefits—such as minimizing exposure to noise, dust, and hazardous tasks—human-robot interaction (HRI) introduces new risks that remain largely unaddressed. This study explores the safety dynamics of HRI in 3DCP through a survey of 553 industry professionals and a review of related literature. Findings reveal strong support for 3DCP’s safety potential but highlight critical barriers, including high training costs, lack of regulatory standards, and limited workforce readiness. Contractors prefer outsourcing 3D printing tasks, particularly commissioning activities, to mitigate risks. The study also identifies specific HRI roles—such as programmers, operators, and teammates—and classifies them by interaction levels (coexistence, cooperation, and collaboration). Although some tasks, like placing MEP boxes, are seen as simple, they still pose safety concerns due to close worker-robot proximity. This research emphasizes the urgent need for role-specific risk assessments and the development of safety guidelines tailored to 3DCP environments. It lays the groundwork for improving worker protection and advancing the safe integration of robotics in construction.
