Systematic Review of the Use and Modifications of the ‘Trust in Automated Systems Scale’ (Jian et al., 2000)
DescriptionSubjective measurements of trust in automation are prolific and easy to implement. Yet, it is also easier to violate validated measures by altering seemingly innocuous components of the measure. We exhaustively reviewed the Jian scale’s trust metric as used across 1480 cited works; more than half altered the scale in ways which could disrupt the scale’s validity, and the more modifications made, the more compromising they become. We discuss further implications and guidelines for the future of successful and rigorous subjective trust measurement practices.
