ECG for Evaluation of Driver Vigilance Response to Coordinated, Interior Stimuli
DescriptionA study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of various interior stimuli across 31 subjects in a simulated night drive. Stimuli included varying executions of lighting, scents, audio, haptics, and climate. Subjects sat in a running, modified large SUV with a video of nighttime driving playing to induce fatigue and then exposed to the different stimuli. Throughout the simulated drive, subjects ECG was recorded using the Polar H10. SDNN and RMSSD showed significant improvements for alertness when comparing time exposured to stimuli to the monotonous driving simulation. SDNN, which has been shown to have a positive correlation with alertness, rose by 4.89ms (p < 0.000) during the stimulation period and continued to improve post-stimulation over 10 minutes by an additional 6.42ms (p < 0.000). RMSSD, also shown to positively correlate with alertness, increased in the stimulation period as well by 4.75ms (p < 0.000) but did not see the same maintenance of alertness through the post-stimulation period. Both of these metrics are supported by self-reported alertness ratings which showed a significant improvement during stimulation of 1.8 (p < 0.000) on a scale from 1 -10. These findings show there are solutions to be explored within existing features to improve alertness.
