Organic and Non-Organic Consumer Knowledge, Values, and Information Seeking Behavior
SessionPoster Session 2
DescriptionWhile organic food products are becoming increasingly popular, it is unclear how much consumers understand about the USDA Organic certification, to what extent the reported values of organic and non-organic consumers vary, and whether these consumers display different information-seeking behavior when shopping for food products. We surveyed a nationally representative sample of American households to gain a better understanding of the landscape surrounding consumers who choose to purchase organic food products and those who do not. We found that while the majority of organic consumers considered themselves knowledgeable about organic food products, they had incomplete and inaccurate knowledge of what constitutes a certified organic food. Our findings also indicate that organic and non-organic consumers have different professed food-related values and different information-seeking behavior when it comes to their label reading practices.
