From Classroom to Career: Reflections of Future Healthcare Professionals on Their Experience in a ‘Workplace Health’ Course

DescriptionThe International Labor Organization emphasizes the importance of building competence in occupational health and well-being for a thriving world. To address this, an instructor offered an undergraduate course called “Health in the Workplace” to enhance general competence in occupational well-being among exercise science students in their program. Utilizing Human Capital Theory, course alumni were interviewed based on the Human Capital framework and asked about the information they recalled and how they applied their knowledge when pursuing future careers. Recruiting graduated students proved challenging. In interviews with four students, it was discovered that they applied the class concepts to themselves and their patients. Only one of the four students explicitly mentioned discussing health and safety during their interview; however, the others talked about how their knowledge could assist them in their future careers. Future work will examine how discussing healthy, safe, and well-being topics in undergraduate courses contributes to the long-term career development of these students. Finally, the authors are developing a course that provides students with more explicit career development discussions while keeping health and well-being in mind.
