Exploring Crew Resource Management Training Using Virtual Reality and Large Language Models
DescriptionCrew resource management (CRM) is fundamental to aviation safety, enhancing communication and decision-making in the cockpit. Traditional CRM training aims to prevent aviation accidents by improving crew performance and coordination. This supports high levels of human-system performance within the flight deck and beyond. However, CRM training is often classroom-based or relies on costly simulators. These methods use constrained lessons that do not fully capture the dynamics of potentially stressful real-world interactions among flight crew, cabin crew, and passengers. Moreover, traditional CRM training lacks the flexibility to adapt to individual trainee needs.
To address these limitations, a new CRM training model is proposed. This model utilizes virtual reality (VR), large language models (LLMs), and artificial intelligence (AI) to provide dynamic, robust training that can evolve with trainee skills. We draw on expertise from CRM training experts, aviation professionals, and developers of VR and LLMs to outline an approach that leverages VR's immersive potential and AI's simulation capabilities. This integration allows trainees to engage in realistic interactions with simulated co-pilots, cabin crew, and air traffic controllers, enhancing the training experience.
