Using Systems And Resilience Engineering Literature To Understand Labor And Delivery Work Systems

DescriptionObstetric medicine is a complex and variability healthcare system. Due to the unique nature of providing simultaneous care to multiple patients, obstetric medicine can benefit from systems and resilience engineering methods. The objective of this study is to investigate how systems and resilience engineering methods have previously been applied to surgical environments within the United States. Synthesizing the existing literature from the healthcare community will allow us to identify future research opportunities within obstetric medicine, specifically labor and delivery. This study seeks to understand how principles of systems engineering and resilience engineering methods can be applied to healthcare environments beyond non-surgical care environments and provider well-being in order to design novel approaches to gather provider feedback about their work. Designing tools that accurately capture provider feedback will help key healthcare stakeholders close the gap between “work-as-imagined” and “work-as-done” with the intent on improving patient safety and clinician performance.
