Generative AI in Healthcare: Exploring Patients’ and Care Teams’ Perspectives
SessionPoster Session 1
DescriptionHealthcare systems are increasingly adopting technological innovations that use artificial intelligence to enhance efficiency, reduce clinician burnout, and improve patient outcomes. However, the adoption of AI tools requires in-depth consideration of both patients' and care teams' insights. This study uses semi-structured interviews with 25 nurses, 3 care partners, and 15 patients to examine stakeholder views on integrating generative AI in healthcare to better understand their needs, barriers, and opportunities surrounding AI adoption in healthcare. The results show that while older staff express skepticism toward AI, younger, tech-savvy nurses are more receptive to it. Care teams see AI as a helpful tool for documentation and decision-making; however, they also emphasize the importance of transparency, ethical governance, and maintaining human engagement. Patients welcomed the integration of accessible digital technologies like ChatGPT in hospital settings for education and post-discharge support while stressing the need for trust, clear communication, emotional support, and personalized care. The study highlights the importance of involving users early in the design process of creating AI tools. By facilitating the integration of AI into practice, healthcare organizations can strike a balance between innovation and compassionate, patient-centered care.
