Sensitivity of Self-Report Measures of Trust in Human-Autonomy Teaming

DescriptionAs autonomous agents are integrated into human teams, accurately measuring trust in Human–Autonomy Teams (HATs) becomes essential. Most existing trust surveys were designed for either human-human or human-automation contexts and may not fully capture HAT-specific dynamics. This study evaluated the sensitivity of three commonly used trust measures—McAllister (1995), Jarvenpaa et al. (1998), and Jian et al. (2000)—to trust manipulations in a simulated HAT environment. Thirty-six participants completed five missions using a remotely piloted aircraft system alongside two confederates acting as teammates via a Wizard-of-Oz approach. Trust was manipulated through team composition (human vs. autonomous teammates) and communicative vs. behavioral trust/distrust spread. Surveys were administered after each mission to assess trust in teammates and the system. Results indicated that no single survey was sensitive to all manipulations. McAllister’s affective and cognitive trust scales were responsive to communication manipulations. Jian’s trust in autonomy and system trust captured communication and mission effects. Only McAllister’s cognitive trust scale targeting the pilot detected behavioral spread. These findings suggest that trust instruments vary in responsiveness across trust types and manipulation sources. Combining instruments based on research goals is critical for capturing trust dynamics in human-autonomy teams.
