Beyond Detection: A Systematic Review of Driver Fatigue Prevention and Mitigation Strategies
SessionPoster Session 1
DescriptionThis systematic review investigates empirical studies on driver fatigue mitigation strategies. Following PRISMA guidelines, the review includes 38 peer-reviewed studies retrieved from three major academic databases. Fatigue countermeasures are grouped into four categories: vehicle-based, driver-related, combined vehicle-driver, and road-related. These interventions are also classified by temporal engagement as either continuous or periodic. The review assesses the mechanisms and effectiveness duration of each strategy and outlines the subjective and objective methods used to evaluate fatigue. The findings emphasize the need for proactive approaches that sustain cognitive engagement. The paper offers recommendations for designing real-time, adaptive systems that involve driver interaction to improve safety and reduce fatigue-related incidents.
