Health IT in Mental Health Care: Supporting Children with Medical Complexity and Their Parents
DescriptionChildren with medical complexity (CMC) are defined as children who have three or more chronic medical conditions and require constant care. This study explores the mental health challenges faced by parents of CMC and examines the potential role of health information technologies in offering support. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 community caregivers from the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) and 19 parents of CMC. This recruitment strategy allowed us to capture a comprehensive understanding of parental stress, mental health needs, and suggestions for mental health technology from both SPAN community caregivers and parents of CMC. We used inductive thematic analysis to extract insights from the interview transcripts. The findings offer technology designers valuable insights into the current needs of CMC families, particularly in the area of mental health IT solutions.
